Dr Takako “Eva” Yabe is a Specialist Head & Neck Surgeon who consults and operates at Wollongong Private and Wollongong Public Hospitals.
Her primary focus is on diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and salivary gland, as well as oral cancer surgery, skin cancer surgery, craniofacial surgery, and reconstructive surgery.
Eva was initially trained as a physiotherapist and then studied Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Wollongong. She then completed a Master of Surgery Degree at the University of Sydney in 2015 focusing on surgical science. She was then accepted into General Surgical training, which she completed in 2019 and achieved Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS).
After attaining FRACS, Eva was the Head and Neck Fellow at Wollongong Hospital under the mentorship of Dr Bruce Ashford and Dr James Wykes. She then embarked on additional sub-specialty training abroad, where she worked as the Reconstructive Microsurgery Fellow at the prestigious St George’s Hospital in London, UK.
Eva has significant involvement in clinical research and is currently completing a Master’s Degree in Biostatistics through the Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia (BCA), where she plans to become accredited in biostatistics.
She is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Wollongong and is currently responsible for the educational leadership of surgery across the university’s Doctor of Medicine (MD) program.
As well as her involvement in teaching and training medical students, junior doctors, and surgeons, Eva is an integral member of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Head & Neck multidisciplinary cancer team focussed on providing patients and their families with the best, evidence-based care and treatment.
Beyond surgery, Eva has participated in overseas volunteer medical missions, including with the Mercy Ships and the Spiti Projects.
